Greenfield began to grow rapidly after it became one of the first towns to be established in Johnson County when it was created from parts of Harrison Township on November 6, 1827. In 1850–51 mail service was extended from Greenfield eastward via Stagecoach Road into neighboring Harrison Township until that road became too busy for wagons to travel regularly; then local farmers took over Delivery Service for their own families until railroads arrived in the late 19th century and brought daily mail services directly to rural residents' homes!
