Lebanon was founded in 1827 as a log cabin community by Scots-Irish immigrants. The first post office was established in 1829. Lebanon has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years according to archeological evidence and oral history. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Lebanon were hunter-gatherers who lived near the confluence of the White and Black Rivers in central Illinois. In 1827, Scots-Irish immigrants from Ireland settled on a farmstead west of present day Lebanon and named it "Lebanon". By 1830, most of the Irish had left for Kansas Territory due to religious persecution there following the potato famine that struck Ireland during that decade. In 1831, Lafayette Township was organized under state law and became one of La Porte County's first districts; Lebanon remained within Lafayette Township until its merger with Terre Haute into Monmouth County in 1968. At the time of its incorporation into La Porte County, Lebanese had a population of just 5 people; however, it rapidly grew through word-of-mouth communication with other pioneer settlements nearby such as Clearwater (now Terre Haute) and Coweta (now Westville). In 1870, when Lewis Cass became governor of Indiana and ordered all Indian reservations be closed pursuant to his policy known as "The Great Law", Lebanese residents made common cause with other rural Hoosiers to resist eviction – an event which helped trigger political violence throughout much of northwesternIndiana during the late 19th century culminating with The Red Scare hysteria preceding American entry into World War I ↑ From 1840 until 1850, when limestone deposits were discovered northeast of Lebanon near present day Mount Carmel–the area now called Mount Carmel National Park–farmers continued to exploit these resources resulting in increased traffic along this early stage road connecting Indianapolis and Cincinnati via terra incognita ↓ This roadway remain one today connecting Indianapolis and Cincinnati ↓ As limestone production increased around this time periodic flooding events occurred across southern & eastern Kentucky affecting much agricultural land also resulting various forms including crop failures leading many farmers to move their operations further inland or abandon their fields altogether ↑ After accession in 1851 Congress repealed Cass' order closing Indian reservations ↑ map facing page ↑ On April 30th 1865 while voting on United States president Abraham Lincoln's 3rd termmap faced page ↑ two men shot dead↓ On May 7th 1865 afterfax information about shooting reached local authorities they raided house where suspects James Ryder & John Wilburn were residing↑ Heading towards home Ryder pulled out his Colts permit which he showed police before running inside↑ On return fire started shooting killed both men
