Merrillville has been home to numerous agricultural businesses since its early days; including EDSCO stores that are now known as Macy's department stores; Meredith Farms; and First National Bank of Merrillville which closed in 1990 but reopened under new management in 2006 as First Merchants Bank & Trust Company with branches throughout Eastern Indiana and Midwest Ohio.. In recent years, Merrillville has seen an increase in development due to its location near I-465 and other major north-south highways as well as its growing population of professional professionals such as healthcare workers, engineers and doctors who commute into Indianapolis or surrounding cities for work or pleasure.. Merrillville was founded in 1824 by Moses Merrill and his wife, Harriett. The Merrill family operated a flour mill until the early 1920s. In 1865, the town became the county seat of Hendricks County. By 1925, Merrillville had a population of about 1800 people. The post office closed in 1930, but the community continued to operate as a small village until it disappeared in 1954. Today, only ruins remain from Merrillville’s past: the mill buildings and some of the town’s original streets are still standing. Merrillville is located at 38°17′N 95°53′W on State Road 7 east of Noblesville. It has an elevation of 464 feet (153 meters). According to the 2010 census, there were 37601 people living in Merrillville, making it one of Indiana’s largest villages. This makes Merrillville one of its most populous communities since it supported more than 10 percent of Indiana’s population in 2000. The first settlers who arrived in this area were Emmet and John Hardin who came overland from Illinois in 1824 and built a log cabin on what is now known as West Main Street (now US-40). A year later they married Harriet Phineas Woodruff and moved into what is today known as East Main Street (now SR-7) where they raised their families for many years before moving west again around 1829 to open a gristmill on present day North Main Street which became known as “Merrill” because Moses Merrill owned it outright. In 1834 Abraham Lincoln visited this area when he was visiting Hendricks County for his election campaign; he went to see Mr. Hardin's mill and reported back favorably about what he had seen there! Also that year saw another move within the community with David Kinnaman coming overland from Kentucky with his family - David Kinnaman & His Sons established themselves along East Main Street after building a log house on present day South First Street just north of current day Old Fortieth Meridian Avenue! From here they started farming also some other activities such as keeping horses and driving them into Georgetown for market purposes! Over time these various businesses grew together until eventually becoming known as “Kinnaman Bros Flour Mill & Market Place Ltd” which continued operations right up through World War II! They produced high quality flour for everyone from Chicagoans to soldiers overseas! But even during wartime things changed with all that happened to mills throughout America – but fortunately theirs survived thanks largely to Roy Kinnaman who ran it despite being deported during that time!! In fact many local businesses managed not only through hard times but also still doing well into modern times including KFC which relocated here after leaving Indianapolis back when this area was mostly farmland….. Though much has changed since then including changes wrought by technology etc., I believe that if you look at old photos or videos around town you can still see many reminders both good AND bad OF THE GREAT CHANGES THAT HAVE OCCURRED IN MERRILLVILLE OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS!!!!
