Afterhill's death in 1917, his widow donated his home to the town for use as a library/museum combo called "Hill House Museum & Library." After her death in 1961, that property became part of the University Park campus complex which includes all three buildings: Hill House Museum & Library;carbohydrate research lab Building; and Newton Hill Campus Center housing various university offices and amenities including dining halls and recreational facilities such as tennis courts and golf courses. During World War II, many homes within walking distance of downtown were requisitioned for military use or used for local administration functions such as gas stations or stores operated by Departmental Headquarters personnel during wartime shortages elsewhere within city limits (such as Fort Wayne). These homes continued to be used into postwar years until they were sold off or demolished officially after 1945 when downtown redevelopment moved forward full steam ahead without regard to residential uses or occupancy status quo ante . The current incarnation of downtown was formally designated on October 12th 1953 when Mayor Drury announced plans for beautification including streetlights new sidewalks water features etcetera following surveys conducted pursuant thereto . Some 5 blocks long stretching along Main Street between State Road 9W (now First Avenue) northwardly past North Park Elementary School (& adjacent lot now occupied by Ironton Post Office annex) thence westwardly across South Park Boulevard thence southwesterly along First Avenue finally terminating at Broadway near present day Masonic Temple
