Peru, Indiana, is a small town in Carbon County, Indiana. The population was 3,575 at the 2010 census. Peru was founded by Peter Jennings and others in 1824 as the site of a Methodist church established by him and his wife Anna. The first post office in Peru was established in 1825. In 1836, the town became part of Carbondale Township. The township Name changed to Carbondale in 1903. The name change may be related to the fact that Carbondale Junction on the West Branch of the Wabash River served as a crossing for stagecoaches from Chicago to Lockport and back until 1925 when it closed due to bridge construction upstream. In 1912, Carbondale voters approved a resolution designating their public square “ located at what is now Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue”; this square would later become known as Perry Square after Jensons descendants moved into the area around 1920. In 1926, Carbondale Township renamed itself Peru County after its founder Peter Jennings’ hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland where he had come to live while attending medical school at University College London (UCL). So also did Peru High School which opened its doors during 1928-29 under guidance of then Superintendent Drue Halsey who taught physical education there with future head coach Earle Bruce among his students along with future members of both teams including Hall of Fame players Bob Ballard and Gene Upshaw In 1939, when World War II began John Fetterman took over leadership of Peru High School becoming Superintendent for all Carbon County Schools before retiring in 1974 leaving an administrative legacy that included establishment/development/maintenance/administration Of Perry Square Park located on SW corner 2nd Ave & Main St;opened Sept '39 thru Oct '40 long believed privately funded park addition paid for & operated jointly w/ Peruvian government
