Portage, Indiana is a town in Winnebago County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Portage was Nicholas Brady who arrived in 1833. He and his wife were the first white people to purchase land in this area and built a cabin on the south side of the stream that later became known as Brady's Bluff. In 1836, John Hays established a post office here with mail service from Kankakee Junction, Illinois. In 1837, George Wickersham platted this area and named it after General James Hinton (1796-1868), a Union officer who had fought in the Mexican War and won the Battle of Buena Vista. In 1840, Michael O'Brien purchased land east of present day Brady's Bluff where he erected a log cabin which served as his house until 1861 when he moved to Jeffersonville and developed his farm there into an orange orchard which still stands today. This orchard would become one of Portage’s most important economic assets through its production of oranges for local markets throughout much of America during both Prohibition and World War II. In 1847-48, John Prentice organized a group of settlers called “The Eighty Sixers” who came from eastern Michigan via West Point to settle near what is now Carbondale on High Street in anticipation of railroad construction nearby that would bring new jobs to their community thereby stimulating growth within it; however no such railroads ever materialized so they quickly abandoned all hope for development here despite their best efforts). The following year (1848) John Prentice donated 640 acres (250 hectares) north by northwest cornering High Street between State Road 8th Avenue and State Road 17th Avenue just west of present day Main Street to form what today is known as "Prentice Park." It wasn't until 1865 when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation giving Winnebago County its own government making Portage an incorporated town; however due to lack thereof funds many improvements did not take place such as churches being built until well into the 20th century including Our Lady Of Peace Catholic Church which still stands today—one reason why it has been called “the oldest continuously operating religious building in America”

Portage, Indiana was founded in 1781 by a band of French fur traders. The area that is now Portage was part of the Adirondack Park when it was purchased by the United States in 1802. The town began to grow rapidly after railroads were built in the area and a depot was established here in 1858. In 1865, the first college in Indiana opened its doors at what is now Old Main University. The town experienced significant growth during World War II as the port for manufacturing products for America's military. After the war, Portage became an important center for education and commerce until it lost its status as a major city after suburban development took hold. Today, Portage remains a small community with strong ties to its history and culture.
