South bend remained an agricultural center until after World War II when it began experiencing rapid growth in petroleum production due to large investments made by local entrepreneurs Danny Thomas and Jay Cooke; however agriculture still remains its primary economic focus." In 1973 Notre Dame University opened its doors here giving rise to one of America's most celebrated universities but also creating enormous social challenges such as race relations which continue today." Today South Bend is home to several major companies including Purdue Pharma which manufactures opioids; Hendrickson Foods which produces corn dogs; Menard Jewelers which produces faceted stones; Honda Motor Company who manufactures Odyssey minivans etc.; Rockne Global Properties Inc., which owns two shopping malls located in Mishawaka and Vernon Hills; Illiana Holdings Inc., which controls three high schools operated by LaSalle Parish School District No.(LASD) across from campus); among others." As one of America’s growing metropolitan areas – defined both geographically and demographically by job growth – South Bend has seen significant redevelopment over recent decades that has brought new life into much older neighborhoods while preserving important aspects of these neighborhoods history/culture/scene."
In 1847, the first permanent European settlers in South Bend, Indiana were French nobleman La Salle and his family. La Salle had been sent to India as a missionary in 1798. He was one of the founders of Notre Dame de Paris, which became the first Catholic university in America. The college was founded on October 26, 1848 by Bishop John Hughes of Madison County and Rev. George Wright. In 1853, South Bend became a city and it granted charter to the Michigan Central Railroad on November 1, 1854.
