The city of Speedway was founded on November 15, 1907 by order of then-Governor John F. Kennedy as part of an effort to revitalize the town after its closure by the BNSF Railroad. The original site was located on current day West Side Road between Old National Pike and Speedway Boulevard. In 1924, racing began at what would eventually become Bigelow Stadium and quickly became one of America's most popular sports events with thousands attending each year. In 1956, Bigelow Stadium was replaced by what is now Lucas Oil Stadium (formerly IMAX Theatre). In 2002, Speedway merged with neighboring smaller cities Egyptville and Findlay to form a new municipality known as "Speedway-Egyptville". The new municipality encompasses all of Hancock County east of Interstate 45 and portions of Franklin and Posey counties west of I-45. As a result of this merger, Speedway lost its charter from the City Council but it remains a full member in both municipal councils which meet twice a month. In 2018, Turner Broadcasting System merged with Time Warner again to create AT&T Wireless Communications Incorporated.
Sprintway was one of the original five towns in what is now Speedway, Indiana. It was founded on November 3, 1873 by George Washington Stephenson and others along the new Erie Canal. The town grew quickly because of its location near the new railroad line and other businesses. In 1900, Speedway had a population of 1,500 people and was incorporated as a village. On July 16, 1907, Speedway became an incorporated city with a population of 10,000 people.
