Speedway is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Spin-town" originated on November 6, 1907 when US Route 52 was rerouted through the town to become its present alignment. Speedway has been around since 1892 as a stagecoach stop on the old Chicago and Indianapolis Railroad line. In 1905, US 52 became the first road in this area to be named after anthenymic speedway company founder and president James J. Fields Jr.. In 1912, when Indiana's only track opened (the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway), Speedway became one of its initial home base areas for racing operations including both auto races and horse events. The original race track surface was located just north of Main Street east of what is now First Street NW in what is now part of the village of Westville. This location allowed for easy access by automobile from across central Illinois and from other parts of Indiana; it also had a better view than some later tracks that were built further away from villages or metropolitan areas. In 1932, following Interstate 95's construction through Terre Haute, Speedway merged with nearby Westville to form one large community with shopping malls and other amenities located within easy reach of each other. In 1951, during American Motors Corporation's heyday as a major manufacturer in southern Indiana, Speedway expanded into north side Terre Haute suburbia which then bordered on I-465/I-475 (now North Bend Road). American Motors closed down their manufacturing facility there in 1972 but not before leaving behind an impressive list of NASCAR drivers who raced there including Darrell Waltrip (poleman at Daytona), Ronnie Peterson (winners at Sonoma & Milwaukee), Rick Mears (1st place at New Hampshire) and Bobby Labonte (2nd place at Charlotte). Incidentally - most importantly - Rick Mears' victory at Charlotte made him NASCAR driver #1 for three years running beginning with his victory over Waltrip at Arlington International Raceway two months earlier! After being shuttered by American Motors Corporation in 1972 however - Speedway experienced rapid growth as a result of new ownership which saw it become one of the largest open-air Drag Racing Facilities east of Chicagoland etc... With many improvements including: enlarged infields; addition/ renovation/updating grandstands; installation/replacement/upgrading lighting systems etc... by 2000 it had reached several million dollars per year in annual revenue!!! Today SSD remains one America’s leading open air Drag Racing Facility while also providing excellent opportunities for entertainment experiences such as live music concerts throughout year long series etc... making it easily accessible to everyone regardlessof age etc...
