Terre Haute is a city in central Indiana. The population was 16,732 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in and the county seat of Terre Haute County. The name "Terre Haute" can be traced back to 1824 when French traders established a fur trading post on the north bank of the White River near present-day Terre Haute. The name changed to "Hautes-Alpes" (High Alps) in 1850, then "Hautes-Provence" (High Provence) in 1878. In 1924, Terre Haute became one of five cities within the new U.S. state of Indiana that were designated as "Election Day Cities". Terre Haute is a city in southern Indiana, United States. The population was 95,922 at the 2010 census.
