Wabash, Indiana is a town in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Wabash County. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first European to visit the area now known as Wabash was French explorer Pierre-Jean de La Salle in 1685. He named what is now Wabash River after his friend and mentor, General Marquis de Lafayette. Reviving interest in La Salle's discoveries in this part of present day Indiana led to more exploration and development here in the 1800s, with early settlers coming from as far away as Kentucky and Ohio looking for new land to settle. In 1817, General James Kossuth founded a trading post on this site called "Kossuth's Fort" which served as a point of entry into what is now Illinois Territory (now Michigan). In 1818, when Wabash County was organized, Kossuth's Fort became its courthouse building and later became known as "the Mound". In 1827, construction began on what would become Wabash College; it opened its doors in 1830 and has been continuously operating ever since under various names including: First Presbyterian School (1833), Wabash Normal School (1836), Western Reserve University (1912), Indiana Wesleyan University (1920), Purdue University West Lafayette Campus (2006). The first post office opened here on November 1, 1829; it continued service until October 14th 1870. This location also saw growth during this time with several buildings built such as: The old jail located off Main Street which still stands today; A gristmill that functioned until 1978; A Masonic Lodge which met inside until 1964; An agricultural school which operated from 1865-1922; And finally an industrial park that sprouted up around 1958-1960 called "The Factory". Today aspects of these buildings still exist such as: The jail’s original cells/hallway leading into it from Main Street; The mill’s water tower still standing today next to the gymnasium complex/field house where classes were held before moving indoors for football games during prohibition days; And lastly an Agricultural Research Center currently housing an exhibit about local agriculture being used by local farmers today located just east of town along US 12 across from Interstate 64

Wabash, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana that is the seat of Wabash County. The population was 5,639 at the 2010 census, making it one of the lowest-populated counties in Indiana. The county seat is West Lafayette. The first permanent settler in what would become Wabash County was James White in 1814. He and his family founded a trading post on the Wabash River near present day Lafayette. That post served as a base from which traders explored and traded with Native Americans along the entire Ohio River region. In 1824, White sold his land to John Myrick for $2,000 cash and moved to what would become Wabash County. The first school in what would become Wabash County was opened by Reverend John Settle on October 12, 1830 at what are now Goodrich and Green streets in Lafayette. The school initially served as aReverend Settle’s homechooling program for children living around him on Jackson Road between Goodrich and Farmington Streets until he moved to Lafayette proper in 1836 when he established an additional school there known as “Emanuel Academy” which became “Wabash Normal School” after becoming part of Purdue University campus in 1895 ThisSchool also housed part of early technology company IBM's research laboratories during World War II In 1857, the Indiana General Assembly passed an act providing for regional education within each congressional district; this act led to establishment of Wabasha Township High School District No 2 headquartered in West Lafayette as well as other buildings downtown including our current courthouse (1901) On November 3rd1857 a fire destroyed most of Goodrich Street Baptist Church located two blocks northeast of our current courthouse building (occupied since 1901). A new church was built on that site soon afterward but it burned down again just before it could be completed A third church (Methodist) also stood close by on Michigan Avenue east of Present Day Elm Street however thischurch too burned down not long after its dedication . . . In 1906 local resident Isaac Beasley donated land across State Line at Walnut Grove off US Highway 20 (now called Louisville Street) for use as an agricultural college instead thereof being used only for football games until 1948 when it became Purdue University's Purdue Agricultural College
The first permanent settler in what is now Wabash County, Indiana was Joshua Harker in 1814. He and his family moved from Pennsylvania to this area. The first post office was established at Wabash on July 1, 1827.
