In 1836, Warsaw was chartered as the county seat of Calumet County. The town continued to grow rapidly and by 1840 had more than 5,000 residents. By 1850, Warsaw had become an extensive agricultural center with over 100 farms and 2 sawmills. In 1861, the city of Warsaw was incorporated and quickly became one of the most important settlements in the area. The city prospered until World War II when it experienced significant decline due to its proximity to German-occupied Poland and its lack of resources.
