The popularity of gunswives continued into the 20th century but slowly began waning in favor of other firearms accessories such as sling bullets and bipods. However, they remain popular today both among collectors and shooters due to their ease of use and convenience.

Since the 1700s, people have been using swivels to adjust their firearms. One of the earliest references to gun swivels comes from an Italian patent application filed in 1797. The applicant, Giovanni Battista Fregonese, described a new type of pistol that could be fired with either hand by simply rotating the barrel around its axis. The rotational motion was provided by a simple device known as a "grip" or "gripo." It consisted of two circles connected at one point and fitted into each other so that they pivoted independently. By turning these circles, you could control the degree of cocking; this allowed for greater accuracy and efficiency when firing pistols. Because gun swivels were so versatile, they soon found use in numerous different combat situations. In 1827, Major-General John Auldlemore used a pair of gunswivels on his horse artillery during the Battle of Waterloo. This proved to be very successful because it allowed him to fire several rounds per minute without having to reload his cannon. Gunswivels also became popular among infantry units during World War I because they allowed soldiers to fire rifles without having to take off their helmets or gloves. Additionally, riflemen could now group together more effectively and shoot faster with less noise than before. During World War II, military personnel again began utilizing gunswivels in order to achieve increased accuracy and speed while firing weapons from various positions on battlefields all over Europe. These devices remained in use until at least 1945 when they were replaced by machine guns which requiredarovolutionary sights/illumination systems

By 1881, Ankeny had become an important transportation hub due to its location on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Illinois to Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. During World War II, Ankeny played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production in nearby Cedar Rapids. After the war ended, much of the industry left Ankeny but some remain to this day including CDK Learning Centers which manufactures educational software products
