The original store was built on the current site of State Fairgrounds and it continued to be operated until 1951 when it closed its doors for good after years of declining sales. One of the first businesses to open in Bettendorf was a bakery which started operations in 1850 on Broadway just south of Main Street. The bakery continued to operate until 1957 when it converted to an all-natural food emporium which remains operational today with additional space devoted to retail sales and event facilities. In addition to its commercial holdings there were also several residences built during this time that continue to be used by residents today including one known as "The Blacksmith's House" which stands at 597 S Main Street and has been occupied since 1881 when Jacob Schwarzwaldang moved from Germany into what is now Payne County and began working there as a blacksmith before eventually becoming owner/operator of what is now called Schwarzwald & Schwarzwald (now Schwartzschild Properties) which developed into one of Bettendorf's most successful businesses through much of the 20th century although some aspects have changed notably its name).
