The Bettendorfs were among the early settlers in this area and their crops helped to support the community for over a century. In 1975, Bettendorf became an unincorporated community within Bettendorf Township. As of 2010, it had a population of just under 100 people. In 1907, millinery manufacturer Anna Laughlin came to Bettendorf from Davenport to open her new retail store at Fourth Street and Park Avenue; this was one of the first commercial entities in Bettendorf. During World War II, local industries such as engineering plants produced military equipment for the war effort; these plants were closed down after the war ended but have since been reborn as small businesses in town. After years of growth and development within Pettisville Township adjacent to downtown Bettendorf, plans were made in 1984 to merge those towns into one municipality; however this merger never took place because Pettisville elected not to secede from Des Moines after that city's annexation by Minneapolis-St Paul following their city's victory over Des Moines in an election fought on November 3rd that year

In recent years, however, some residents have argued against returning to their historic moniker because they feel that it may be difficult to maintain unique community values amidst larger metropolitan areas like Des Moines. One interesting aspect of Bettendorff's history is that it has been home to several notable political figures: two Ulysses S Grant Presidents (1881-1884) and four members of the United States Congress (1907-1912). Additionally, many famous performers have made their homes here including Woody Allen, Louis CK and Neil Patrick Harris among others
