Bettendorf, Iowa is a small town located in Des Moines County, Iowa. It was founded in 1855 and has been home to the Bettendorf Rifle Club since 1875. The club currently has over 100 members and provides shooting instruction for children as well as adults. In addition to its rifle club, Bettendorf also has a Trap & Skeet Club, a Pistol & Rifle Range, and an Archery Range. The Rifle Club also offers annual rifle matches against other clubs in the area. The history of gun magazines begins with the establishment of the Bettendorf Rifle Club on November 3, 1875. At that time there were only three rifles available in the area and it was decided that the club would require additional firearms to meet its goals of providing safety for its members and others who might be visiting them. Accordingly, on December 2nd of that year they ordered twelve new rifles from Buffalo Arsenal in Buffalo, New York. These rifles arrived at Bettendorf on January 17th of 1876 and were christened “The Shooting Stars” because they were so new and exciting. The first match held by the club resulted in a victory against their neighboring organization – the Centralia Archers Association – by a score of 10-4. Over time, Bettendorf’s rifleclub grew larger still; by 1909 there were thirty-six members total and they had begun using facilities on Third Street which included a ballistics lab as well as an armory where they could store their weapons until needed again. Bettendorf, Iowa is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf was founded by John Bettendorf in 1847. It became a city in 1951. Bettendorf is located at 38°24′42″N 95°14′28″W (38.944739°N 95.317362°W). The first settler in what would become Bettendorf was John Bettendorf who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1847. He built a log cabin on the east side of the Mississippi River and named it "Bettendorf". In 1850, he married Anna Jensdorf and they moved to what would become Bettendorf and started a farm which they operated until 1865 when they sold it to Isaac Meyers for $3 per acre ($ today). Meyers then donated land to the city of Bettendorf which he named "Meyer Park". The first post office in Bettendorff was established on July 1, 1851, and called "Newberg". On October 6 of that year, residents voted to change the name to "Bettendorft" after their local hero Henryetta Bauer who had battled Native Americans during the Dakota War of 1862-1863. In 1861, during American Civil War hostilities between Union forces and Confederate troops raged throughout much of Iowa Territory including present day Muscatine County; as a result, many citizens left their homes for refuge inside nearby Fort Des Moines or Omaha City Limits where military stores were situated along both banks of the river. Many families also took up residence near Mount Pleasant due to its strategic location commandsing an unobstructed view of all surrounding farmland should enemy forces attempt an attack upstream against Fort Dodge located about west of town on the lower Missouri River Valley (and just across from present day Burlington). By early 1865 most everyone within striking distance had either left or been evacuated when Federal troops began arriving en masse from western Missouri under General Ulysses S Grant with orders to retake Springfield via Waynesville downriver from Fort Dodge as part of plans involving overall Operation Crossroads including simultaneous attacks on many Rebel positions along the Arkansas River valley northwestward into central Nebraska concurrent with General Europe's spring offensive against Confederate defenses around Richmond Virginia Additionally two detachments were ordered towards Sioux City Iowa adjacent to Council Bluffs but these deployments never materialized given that Union control over much northern Iowa had fully Gained by this time In 1883 Danforth & Company constructed a small mill south of town using water power obtained from several springs within walking distance thenceforth known as “Danforth”s Millstream’s Mill being one such stream mentioned earlier hereinbelow . From this small millinery operation grew out numerous other businesses over ensuing years ere full-time operation commenced by Mrs Della Gage March 3rd 1886 & continued until discontinued Septemberson 20th 1889 having produced approx $8000 worth Of Products annually prior thereto viz: A hat millinery business operated by Fannie May Smith; dressmaking operations conducted by Ella Mclntyre & family starting November 15th 1888 & continuing until disbanding January 5th 1893; lace making operations being conducted jointly by three sisters – Rose Aikenhead [sic] Aprill [sic], Nellie Burchfield Novor 8 1890 thru Januarv 25th 1896 inclusive; finally weavers’ spinning mills being conducted throughout entire county commercially viz: The Mattress Factory run by Geo Fritsche c1901-1902 establishment producing thousands Of dollars worth Of products each year previously mentioned . Finally mention must be made hereof pertaining unto our own Citizens Harry Hetzel january 7th 1902 thru february 2nd 1904 ditto Harry Kapp april 9 th 1902 thru march 26 th 1904 inclusive) Bettendonfs history can be traced back more than 150 years before that date when pioneer George Stephenson discovered oil shale formations near what is now Muscatine County while prospecting for coal bed methane near what would later become Ottumwa Junction National Bridge crossing the Missouri River opposite Ottumwa Rapids on February 17th 1863 while working for Drury Coal Coorporated enterprise which included land holdings adjacent to where Bettendonfo now stands

The townsite was founded in 1881 by John A. Bettendorf and his wife Eliza Burchardt and named after him. In 1908, Bettendorf became one of the first communities in Iowa to have electric lights. The Bettendorfs were farmers and ranchers who started growing crops on their farmstead in 1881. They built a log cabin near what is now downtown Bettendorf in 1882 as their home and started farming using horsepower engines that they acquired from local power companies. In 1907, John A. married Eliza Burchardt, who was also a farmer and had also come to live in Bettendorf with her family prior to marriage. Their first child was born there in 1907; their second child was born two years later when they moved to an area near present-day University Park Boulevard and Cedar Rapids Road where they raised their three children until 1959 when they moved back to Bettendorf proper due to health reasons*. From 1909 until she died in 1961, Mrs. A.*Bettendorff led fundraisers for various causes across central Iowa* including building new roadsides hereabouts which helped improve agricultural production throughout the area*. In 1958, Mr. *A.*Bettendorff became president of Des Moines-Waukee Regional Transit Authority (DMART) effective Jan 1st 1959(*). As president of DMART*, he worked hard towards creating more bus service within the metropolitan areas surrounding Des Moines*, as well as developing innovative transportation plans that improved safety for both riders and drivers on our rural routes*. On Nov 2nd 1960(*), Mrs *A.*Bettendonff passed away from leukemia at the age of 71 after spending many years fighting this disease* (*). After her death, Mr *A.*Bettendarfs took over as interim President of DMART until Dec 3rd 1960(*). On that date(*), he was elected permanent President effective Jan 1st 1961(*). In 1957**Mr *A._Bettsoudorffer successfully lobbied then-Gov Bill Cramer for passage of Iowan Electric Light No cost Public Utility Act which created Des Moines* regional transit authority with responsibility for expanding bus service within metropolitan areas adjacenttoDes Moines*. This would eventually lead to Increased ridership on our buses due To decreased fares alongwith Improved safety For bus drivers & Riders! Gov Cramer Approved Legislation!! Today we continue Miss Eliza's legacy by promoting community involvement through fundraising events such as 5K Run/Walk or car wash etc., thereby supporting our local economy while providing social opportunities for all ages!
