Bettendorf, Iowa is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Des Moines metropolitan area and is the county seat of Johnson County. Bettendorf is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Bettendorf was Solomon Greenleaf in 1847. The name of the town may have been inspired by German Bundesstaat (state), "Beden", meaning "border" or "edge." In 1854, Isaac Benton bought 4 acres (1 km²) of land east of present-day Bettendorf and named it Bentonville after himself and his father-in-law, James Averill. By 1870, all but one family had left for lack of food or other opportunities in this new territory which included much of what is now western Johnson County. In 1889, two men started a flour mill on Center Street near present day Bettendorf Elementary School; it became Bettendorf Mill & Grains Co., Ltd.. In 1915, Orville Fenton donated 5 acres (2 km²) to build an ice cream parlor called Fenton's Dairy that still stands today as a prominent landmark in town. That same year also saw the opening of Jennings Drug Store at 9th and College streets; that business remain open to this day as one of Bettendorf's most famous businesses. In 1923, because no one wanted to farm around here due to prevailing bad weather conditions (the Great Depression), John Henthorn built a small hotel on 13th Avenue north from Center Street which he called The Hi House Inn until his death in 1974. In 1929 when newly formed Johnson County was organized out of parts of Ross and Knox counties/, Pettit Field Rd./Old Route 66 became its courthouse square with three buildings: First Court House/Pettit Hall Annex/New Courthouse being erected subsequent thereto including Pettit Hall/Court Annex which served as Jail until 1952 when it was replaced by present day Hendricks Chapel / Community Building . On November 15th 1932 five hundred people attended an agricultural fair held at Pettit Field Road Agricultural Museum while four hundred more came via wagon train from various points around central Iowa

Eventually, gunswivels became more common throughout society because they were more efficient and reliable than other methods of aiming firearms. They can still be found today in various forms including pistols and rifles
