A post office called Fritschville was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1901. In 1847, Isaac Smith moved to Bettendorf from Waupun and founded the first blacksmith shop in America there. Smith's shop became known as the "First Blacksmith Shop on the Great Lakes". In 1861, Amasa Temple came to Bettendorf from Wapello County, Illinois and opened a hotel/motel which remains open today as one of Bettendorf's most popular tourist attractions. His hotel helped spur development around it and led to what is nowknown as Central District of Bettendorf Township. In 1865, George Hahn founded the first gristmill within reach of Bettendorv

Bettendorf, Iowa is a small town in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It lies on the banks of the Des Moines River. Bettendorf is one of the oldest towns in Dubuque County and has been inhabited since 1854. Bettendorf was originally called Bennington and changed its name to Bettendorf after Friedrich Wilhelm Bettendorff, a pioneer settler in the area. The first post office was established in 1856 and had a population of six people. In 1862, Bettendorf became part of the larger Dubuque Township. On January 1, 1868, it became an independent incorporated village when all of Dubuque Township united with Burlington to form Dubuque County. The first school in Bettendorf opened in 1870 and taught grades one through twelve. In 1872, Bettendorf added a cemetary to its cemetery which remains today as one of its most popular attractions for tourists. In 1880, the city of Bettendorf was merged into Burlington by act of Congress with 1 other city/township within Dubuque County all joining together to form what would become Iowa City proper The following year saw new construction begin on what would become known as State Street which ran from downtown Burlington to what is now First Avenue In 1906 State Street was renamed "Bettendorfs Boulevard" in honor of Mr./Ms./Dr./Gov./Mayor Kurt Ziegler who had dedicated much effort into developing this street throughout his tenure In 1916-1917 there were significant changes within the community when both banks located here (the old First National Bank building still stands) closed their doors leaving many residents without banking services options On December 3rd 1921 Mayor Ziegler announced that he would be retiring effective February 1st 1922 so Mrs./Mr./Msgr../Guru Ziegler assumed leadership duties until he could be replaced During Mrs.(Mr.)(Msgr.) Ziegler's incumbency some notable events occurred such as: construction began on what would become known as "The Arches" (now traffic circle) just east of town center; opening up Central Park; establishment or renovation/updating of several schools including Wahlstrom Elementary School; groundbreaking forwhat would eventually become Waterloo High School As leader Mrs.(Mr.)(Msgr.)Ziegler worked tirelessly towards creating opportunities for cultural experiences within her community while also working towards increasing economic development opportunities
