Bettendorf, Iowa is a town in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 5,027 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bettendorf County and its largest city, also named Bettendorf. The name "Bettendorf" is derived from Dutch settlers' name for a place called Baudenzee (now part of Dubuque). The first settler in what is now Bettendorf was Johannes Koppe who arrived on horseback in 1838 and named his new land after his friend and patron, Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Schleicher. This area became known as Koppe's Prairie because so many families bought land here to start farms during that time period. In 1847, Captain James J. Hays, USN commanding officer of the battery at Fort Dodge made an agreement with local residents to build him a fortification to protect their location from Indian raids during the Sioux War which had just ended two years earlier. When it was completed in 1849 it became known as Fort Hays and served as such until 1907 when it was replaced by the current structure today. In 1860, President Abraham Lincoln appointed James Aiken superintendent of public instruction in Iowa Territory which included Bettendorf County according to then-Iowa law which did not allow counties to be created until after Territorial boundaries were surveyed and set out by acts passed by Congress following the Mexican-American War which Nebraska Territory gained status on January 1st, 1865 therefore making Nebraska part of Mexico proper making Bettendorf County's first jurisdiction date back to January 1st 1865 when Omaha City Council placed an order calling all landowners within that territory to appear before them with respect thereto declaring that they should partition their lands into lots or precincts for sale subject only to final determination thereof by competent authority having reference thereto...After much discussion chaired by Mayor John Broome one acre lot number 6 in Township 4 North [now Bettendorifield] Block 1 East [now east side of I-80] was sold for $250 cash on November 15th 1865...This event marks perhaps the earliest development around present day Bettendorifield where some people have lived since that day." Accordingly upon filing for Federal Reserve Act incorporation on February 14th 1870 under section 9702(a) 17 Statutes at Large chaptered "An act supplementary to an act entitled 'An act providing for organization of banks', approved March 3d Anno Domini 1870,' 10 Geo 3d 889'" (with plat #1) both parties executed & submitted same together warranting full faith & credit giving rise thereby certified unto this office [- Capt J Aiken] being duly authorized thereto - Isaac Stevens being Joint Agent United States Patent Office accordingly oath'd before me this 4th day Of July 1870" On May 25th 1870 George Fenton married Lydia Leach daughter of David Leach who resided near Ottumwa Falls & well known fur trader & political figure early Settlers In Petticoat Valley @ Ottumwa Landing IA
