They started a small workshop that produced targets for use at fairs and other events in the community. By 1899, John Brown had passed away, but his wife continued to produce targets and sell them online. The business grew rapidly and by 1912, they were producing 1,000Target Holder per week! In 1916, they formed a partnership with another man named George Sorenson and began producing 100 Target Holder per week together. By 1922, their company had become known as Sorenson & Brown Target Holders Ltd. After World War II ended, the company continued production until it ceased in 1951. Today there are still descendants of those who founded Sorenson & Brown Target Holders Ltd., who continue to produce target holders for local events throughout Bettendorf and Rural Iowa. Some of these individuals have continue to operate the businesses since their grandfathers did before them; others have taken over management after passing away or retired. Regardless of what may have happened in the past few decades -target holders remain an important part of Bettendorf’s history!
