Bettendorf, Iowa is known as the "Hub of the World Telescope Organization" and has been home to many scopes over the years. The Bettendorf telescope was first built in 1887 by Dr. Edward C. Smith and his team at the University of Iowa. It was one of the world's first large optical telescopes and helped unlock new horizons in astronomy. In 1961, Bettendorf became a member of IAU and continuing its role as a center for astronomical research and exposition, hosting international meetings on optics, physics and astrophysics. Today, Bettendorf continues to serve as an important research center for astronomers all over the world with its state-of-the-art facilities including two large observatories - one located on campus and another in exile near Prague – making it possible to observe more than 60 individual objects from Earth using just 10 square meters of real estate!

These Telescopes could use many lenses to view different parts of the sky. By the eighteenth century, most people had large telescopes, and they could see all kinds of objects in the sky. Some people also started to build their own telescopes, so they could make more accurate observations.
The first scopes were designed for use with handguns and rifles. The design was later improved to allow for use with telescopes. In 1665, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a telescope that could be used with either a naked eye or a protection device such as a eyepiece. This work allowed scientists and astronomers to view objects at great distances without having to rely on traditional methods of observation, such as looking through a window or using an observing tower.
Bettendorf, Iowa is a small town in the northwest corner of Iowa. It was founded in 1846 by A.J. Bettendorf and his family. The community grew rapidly during the early 19th century, due to its location on the Great Northern Railroad and its position as a key crossroads for travel between Chicago and Omaha.
