In the early 1800s, Boone, Iowa was a thriving town. The community was founded in 1835 by Captain James Kapp and his wife Anna. The first store in Boone was called the Hallett Store. By 1860, the population of Boone had grown to over 100 people. at that time, Boone became a stop on the Underground Railroad. On November 1st, 1859, Captain James Kapp and his son John were shot and killed outside of their home by Tom Higgins. Irish immigrants who were living in Boone at the time took up arms to revenge their father’s death. On October 15th of that year, 500 men from various companies organized themselves into what is now known as “The Sioux County Rifles” under the leadership of Captains John Kapp and Samuel Loring. They traveled to Stroudsburg, PA where they purchased eight rifles from Amos Kendall (a captain in US Volunteers) for $240 each. Captain James Kapp's Sons Pistol & Rifle Club In 1865, Captain James Kapp's Sons Pistol & Rifle Club formed in memory of his father-in-law Captained Samuel Loring who had been killed during the American Civil War with General Robert E Lee's forces at Appomattox Court House Virginia on April 9th 1865. The club consisted of 8 members and it became an important part of local history due to its role in helping keep firearms availability within limits during this time period while also promoting responsible gun ownership practices among its membership
