The first people to settle in Indianola were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1836. From 1840 until 1851, the town was called Ft. Dodge, after General James Fenton who had commanded American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, the name changed to Indianola after a local farmer found an Iowan rock with the word "Olalla" written on it. This naming arrangement continued until 1907 when it reverted back to Ft. Dodge again. In 1861, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, Indianola became one of many towns located along what is now Interstate 84 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids because Unionists were based there and wanted to avoid battle near their home state of Illinois where they were strong supporters. Despite this strategic location forility (and someContributions from nearby towns such as Davenport), few residents moved away during or immediately following America's participation in World War I due to lack of opportunity or other reasons (including concerns about possible hostilities). Most did not return until well into Prohibition Era times because there was no liquor available east of US 20 and even then buying alcohol was difficult due to high taxes imposed by state governments onDual use items like whiskey and beer which could only be sold within their respective states However, things started changing around 1920 when prices for goods outside of Iowa began dropping as production inside America increased thanks in part to new technology developments like radioactivity that made commodities more affordable than ever before- particularly foodstuffs like sugar and flour which had been staples for centuries in Europe but still carried significant tariffs levied against them by their countries' legislatures This change led directly to increased opportunities for farmers throughout America who could finally afford reliable transportation links instead of havingto carry around massive quantities of materials needed for farming exports that were often expensive and slow moving compared to today's global trade And so over time many farms have relocated back into Indianola either because they've found new markets or because they can't compete with better priced products coming from other parts of America Today, Indianola remains a relatively small town with close relationships among its citizens despite its remote location - something that has helped keep it vibrant over time despite occasional challenges posed by physical isolationism or other factors
Indianola is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settler in Indianola was James B. McGregor in 1839. The town was platted on November 15, 1851 by John WOODS and named for General Andrew Johnson's brother-in-law, Samuel Fenton Indianola (1784–1868). A post office called Indianola was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it closed on October 10, 1907. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Indianola from Cedar Rapids via Dubuque and Fort Dodge. In 1870, the railroad built a branch to western Indianola known as the "Iowa Central" line which ran through today's city limits. The "Iowa Central" line became part of the Chicago Great Western Railway when that company merged with North Western Railway on April 12, 1896. In 1909 Republican Franklin D Roosevelt won his first election as President of America with an overwhelming majority of votes across all three branches of government - judicial nominations were handled by his Vice President Al Smith who would later become Governor of New York City - thanks largely to help from organized labor unions which had spent lavishly on advertising campaigns throughout the country leading up to the election cycle. In 1923 Congress passed what became known as Taft-Hartley Act which repealed most regulations put into place duringthe Wilson presidency including hours maximums for workweek regulation etc., setting off a nationwide strike staged by many large American companies including Ford Motor Company over pay demands while also raising prices for goods sold abroad resulting in significant losses for consumers followed within weeks by mass recessions throughout much of America growing rigorously against any type of government interventionism characterized then as socialism or communism however these same events beginning to take form nationally within months among other things such as increasing film production becoming increasingly popular culminating ultimately with World War II...Granted this does not mean that Roosevelt did not often face opposition from business interests both inside and outside of Washington however he came to be seen more generally as a leader who responded decisively to problems rather than one who acquiesced or played waiting game
