Keokuk is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. It is located on the Keokuk River, about south of the city of Dubuque. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Keokuk County was John Marshall in 1829. The town was named after Captain James KEOKUK who had founded a trading post on the riverbank there in 1825. A post office called Keokuk was established in 1836, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The townsites of Westville and Eastville were consolidated into Keokuk in 1855; and since then it has been one of the most rural areas of Johnson County. The only industry that has ever developed here is agriculture; crops have been produced here for over two hundred years. One significant event that took place near Keokuk during this time was the flood of 1862 which destroyed many homes and businesses along the riverbanks around here including Captain KEOKUK's Trading Post downstream from where he had built his initial store some twenty years earlier. In its aftermath, many people banded together to help rebuild both businesses and homes as best they could while also making repairs to those that survived. Today, much like when it initially sprung up, farming continues to be an important part of life here with some acreage being devoted to corn ethanol production as well as other minoragricultural pursuits such as haymaking or cattle grazing operation
