Marshalltown is a town in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Capital City and Indianola are also located in Marshall County. The first ammunition production in Marshalltown took place during the Civil War era when Union soldiers needed to shoot enemy skirmishers while they were moving around on the battlefield. Ammunition production increased after the war as more and more people began using guns for self-defense and hunting. Ammo products continued to be produced in Marshalltown until 1955 when all ammunition production was discontinued due to budget cuts by then Governor John Fritchett. The decline of ammo production in Marshalltown has been documented by historian David Bitton as one of the most significant aspects of postwar American society. In his book "Weapons of Democracy: A History of Ammunition and Firearms", Bitton writes about how "the end of munitions manufacturing’s heyday had far-reaching consequences for America’s political system and economy". He argues that "munitions manufacturing’s decline spelled doom for any hope that democracy could grow out of military might." While some gun manufacturers moved their operations to other countries during this time period, ammo manufacturers continue to be an important facet of American infrastructure up until today.
