The first mill in Marshalltown was built in 1811 and began manufacturing cannonballs and shot. By 1825, the mills had produced over 1 million rounds of artillery ammunition per year. In 1861, when Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewell ordered all artillery batteries within range of Richmond to fire on April 12th, Marshaltown played a key role in helping defend against this attack. In 1852, William Hantz organized a company of men to build a road from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Omaha, Nebraska. The first post office in Marshalltown was established on October 28, 1852. The railroads arrived in Marshallsville around 1880; but it wasn't until about 1890 that trackage became available for wagon trains carrying goods east to Chicago and points westward along the Missouri River system. This led to an increase in business activity and population growth throughout the early 20th century; however World War I interrupted this development process and later economic recession caused many job losses among the small businesses that had thrived during earlier times of prosperity across various sectors of the economy such as agriculture and manufacturing In 1916/17 there were over 1,000 women working on farms alone in rural Iowa!
