Marshalltown, IA is a town in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. The first gun barrel in Marshalltown was made by George Stephenson in 1846. A post office called Marshalltown was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. A flour mill was built near Marshtown in 1849, and continued to be operated until it closed down in 1914. In 1865, John Cramer started a blacksmith shop here. His shop still stands today and provides services to the community today. Cramer also helped contribute to early gun barrel production here by manufacturing parts for guns that were being imported into the United States from Europe. At one time or another every major city on the American continent had a mills or shops that produced firearms for export. Guns were such an important part of American society that each city had its own arms manufactory where firearms were made specifically for export sale (the precursor of modern ammo stores). In fact, America's first export store opened up just north of Chicago - The Armoury - when James McNaught bought out his brother-in-law's interest therein on December 15th 1857!

He also manufactured shotguns and pistols at his business. In 1959, Bob Ladd started manufacturing handguns in Marshalltown. He continued to manufacture rifles, shotguns, pistols and ammunition until 1978 when he closed his business.

The city was founded by settlers from Illinois in 1847 and named for General John A. Marshall, who fought in the Mexican-American War and had an estate there. The first post office in the town was established on October 16, 1847, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 1, 1865. The first settler to arrive in what would become Marshalltown was George Hargrave. He built a cabin on the east side of town near where present day First Street meets Park Boulevard. Other early settlers included David Kapp and his family who settled around what is now California Avenue; they called their land " Marshfield ". In 1881, when Iowa became a state, Marshalton became its capital and continued to be its chief cultural center throughout the state's history despite occasional attempts by other towns to supplant it as such In 1907-08 the old State Capitol building (now known as Wright Hall) burned down which caused great inconvenience because all business within city limits were closed during that time In 1915-16 an ice cream social at Washington Park resulted in three arrests after police found 50 gallons of butter spread out over two acres Two years later local officials decided to rename one of downtown streets after then Governor Charles Evans Hughes instead of Mayor Harry Lawlor In 1927-28 construction began on what is now Rice University's Bradley Center which led to much development across downtown including numerous new restaurants and stores
