Newton, Iowa is a town in Clearfield County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. Newton is located on the northwest border of Clearfield County and is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newton was platted in 1855 as a village by men who surveyed the area that would become Clearfield County. The first settler in Newton was James Haggerty. In 1872, William Fenton organized a stockade around what is now called "Fenton's Ford" to protect settlers from Sioux Indians during the early period of settlement in central Iowa. Newton School District No. 2 was organized in 1916 and continued operation until it merged with local school districts in 1978. The community of Newton grew rapidly due to heavy railroad traffic that passed through town on the Cedar Rapids & West Point Railroad (CRW&P). As more people moved into Newton, they began buying land for homes and businesses which developed into what are today some of Clearfield County's most valuable properties including: Maple Grove Farm; Fenton's Ford; Hickory Hill Place; Springdale Place; Idlewilde Plantation; Sunnyside Heights; White Sands Plantation and many others. During World War II, much of northeast central Iowa was devastated bybombing raids by Japan which resulted in loss of life and destruction throughout portions of northern India as well as southeastIowa including Newton Township and adjacent areas where large parts of downtown were destroyed or damaged including brick buildings that still stand today such as Union Station (now known as Gateway National Historical Park) which housed train tracks leading out to Des Moines until 1964 when they were converted to run buses on them instead). Many structures within walking distance of each other were leveled leaving only foundation remains standing along with dozens if not hundreds if not thousands of acres destroyed making this one among the worst bomb damage disasters ever inflicted upon an urban area outside Hiroshima or Nagasaki respectively! The devastation also affected numerous small villages surrounding Newton such as Eagar between Waterloo and Nappanee off US Highway 16 etc.) It wasn't until after 1945 when Reconstruction began following World War II that many residents returned home to find their neighborhoods had been rebuilt but while new homes were being built throughout town there remained significant amounts cf used equipment/machinery/buildings left over from war years all scattered around town like abandoned artillery positions just north east corner near modern day Interstate 35 Exit 33 (Old Mr Dole Barber Store), old Oil Refineries next door at I-35 exit 307B north side( now occupied by Midwestern Homes Inc.), abandoned cotton gin across street from post office turned restaurant/bar - all these locations remaining examples reminder that no matter how hard someone tries to forget something happened during those days...the memories remain!
