The history of Spencer can be traced back to 1892 when two men named Hiram Hargrave and Augustus Clements donated land for a school in what is now known as Spencer Township. This school would serve students from east to westside of Marshall County including parts of current Uniontown and Pella townships; it would not exist today if not for these donations by Hargrave and Clements. By 1907, when Spencer became a village - under Section 30A of the City Code - it had 1 storey (or 2 stories) and consisted of 26 homes with a total population of just over 50 people! In 1922, after years spent being an agricultural center servicing surrounding counties (and even serving as home to one county courthouse), that all changed when merchandise sales reached $1 million dollars! And so began what has been called "The golden age" for Spencercommerce with businesses like Sears Roebuck®, Macy's®, Jiffy Lube®, Kmart(), Ford & Co., Raytheon Co., Geico Insurance Company*, etc., opening up shop here! It wasn't long before downtown business owners decided they needed more space and soon enough construction started on what is now known as "The Square", which included demolition of many old buildings (including those mentioned earlier) to make way for new commercial development! Today's downtown area features some well-known businesses such as Mervyn's Pizza (), Lowe's Home Improvement (), Starbucks® Coffee & Tea (), Subway sandwich locations (), gas stations (*GAS STATIONS AVAILABLE IN AND NEAR DOWNTOWN SPENCER*)*, restaurants such as Jack Daniels' Barbecue () and Brewster’s Fine Chinese Restaurant ();*(*PARKING ON DENMARK STREET IS NOW OPTIONAL FOR BUSINESSES THAT ACCEPT VEHICLE PARKING)*/, numerous banks* (*BANKS AVAILABLE IN AND NEAR DOWNTOWN SPENCER*, among others), bars/pubs such as The BuzzerBar* ($) *(NEW BAR OPENED UP THIS YEAR AT 9th St & Cedar St.), theaters such as The Rajah Theatre () *(STORYLINE SHOW PREMIERE STARTED HERE LAST WEEK)), churches (such as First Baptist Church *) *(CHURCH SERVICES ARE HIATUS FROM 12 PM TO 6 PM TODAY ON FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY!), hotels (such as Marriott Marquis Hotel ), apartments (*AND MORE SO THAN EVER BEFORE*)(*APARTMENTS AVAILABLE NOW IN THE CENTRAL SIDE OF THE SQUARE WHICH INCLUDES AN AIR CONDITIONED ROOM*, *HUGE OFFICE STORAGE Unit*)*. Today there are over 350 businesses operating within downtown boundaries alone!
