Urbandale is a small town in Urbandale County, Iowa, United States. The population was 969 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Urbandale were John and Sarah Ann Park in 1856. They erected a log cabin on the north side of present-day State Highway 20. The first school was established in 1871 by Mrs. Anna Ladd as an outdoor school for children of farmers and their daughters living nearby on land that had been purchased from the heirs of Isaac Brockman. In 1875, Mr. and Mrs. Fenton built a two-story frame house on what is now Second Street east of Main Street to serve as the town's first courthouse and jail complex; it still stands today as part of the Urbandale Historical Museum. In 1907, Agris Concrete Company began operations in Urbandale with six workers; it continued until 1978 when it closed its doors because of hard times caused by increased competition from other concrete companies in rural America. In 1909, the tract between Present-day Meridian Avenue east to First Street passed through Urbandale into Waterloo Township when this township was organized; it has since been annexed to Newton Township . In 1917, Jock Shea opened his dairy farm south of town along present day US 16 and formed what is now Shea's Dairy Cooperative which remains one of the largest agricultural cooperatives west of the Mississippi River today.
