In 1885, Urbandale was founded by Major George M. Dodge and Captain Charles H. Smith as a small town on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. The town quickly grew to become an important center for blacksmithing, wagon making, and farming in the area. In 1903, Dodge donated land to build a public shooting range in Urbandale. The range remained in use until 1978 when it was sold to the Urbandale Rifle and Pistol Association (URPA) and used as their private property. The first National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) Prohibited Arms Convention took place in Urbandale in 1938. NSSF later became the American Shooting Sport Federation (ASSF). In 1911, Urbandale became one of thirty-six towns in Iowa that voted to join the National City Bank system as part of a larger effort to improve banking conditions for small communities across America. With its new bank headquarters located in downtown Urbandale (renamed "NationalCityBank Plaza" in 2011), Urbana became one of central banks for many rural areas throughout Iowa until deregulation brought about many local banks consolidation across America during the 1990s and 2000s

In1854 Christopher Urbanski founded the first school in what is now Iowa City; this school would play an important role in developing many aspects of future UI students’ lives including public education statewide. In 1861 Urbanski married Laura Lillis who would later serve as one of UI’s most notable presidents – she was instrumental in creating opportunities for women at UI while also working to promote social justice across campus. After her husband’s death in 1865 she continued to lead the town through some difficult times including bankruptcy proceedings during World War I but eventually emerged triumphant with herculean efforts to rebuildUrbandale following that conflict-ravaged period. During ensuing decades much progress was made inUI towards becoming one of America’s leading universities; during Laura Lillis’ tenure as president (1946-1957) for example we saw unprecedented strides made both insideand outsideofthe university system overall – this includedsignificant increasesin enrollment(from just under 2 thousand undergraduate students when she took officeto nearly 30 thousand today),newinstitutions(suchasthe School of Business AdministrationandSchoolof Medicine),a restructurationofthecampus itselfandthesettlementof numerous longstandingstudent issuesessentiallyendingsthediversity crisisof 1969/70).
