The first European to explore what would become Iowa was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1692. He named this area "Iowa" after his homeland - Iberia, in southern France. A year later Englishman William Jones explored what became Iowa and named it for General James K. Polk - also known as Father Joseph – who had been instrumental in helping to gain independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution (1775-1783). First settled by farmers and their families, West Des Moines gradually grew into a large town with over 100 residents in 1853 when it incorporated as a city under state law. In 1912, its incorporation made it the second largest city in Iowa after Dubuque; however, its growth slowed thereafter due to lack of opportunity and development opportunities outside of downtown Omaha City limits>.
