Coffseyville is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,436 at the 2010 census. Coffeyville is the home of the Coffeyville Junior-Senior High School and the Coffeyville Community Library. The first settlers in what is now Coffeyville were white men from Illinois who arrived around 1854. They named their new town after General David Coffee who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in what is now Coffeyville was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1868, John Waddell founded a gristmill on current day US 54 near present day Griggs City. His mill became one of the most important economic engines of rural Douglas County for many decades. In 1916, Waddell donated land to build a high school which would later be known as Coffeyville Junior-Senior High School. The school opened its doors to students on September 15, 1917 under guidance of Superintendent Jock Anderson. In 1923, Mrs. Hilda Aiken donated land to build a library which would become one ofDouglas County's longest standing institutions

Coffeyville is a city in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1855 by John Coffey and named after him. The first settler in Coffeyville was John Coffey. He built a log cabin on the site of what is now known as "Old Dutchman's Hill". The present house which still stands was built about 1870 by James Cavanaugh. In 1856, George Armstrong Smith moved to Coffeyville from Holland and started a store there. In 1860, he organized the first territorial government of Kansas. In 1862, he became governor of Douglas County and served until 1865 when he resigned to come to Coffeyville to help found the new town. The first school in Coffeyville was opened in 1861 by Mrss A H Sutton and F H Foley. It was a one-room log building with no flooring that cost $10 per month to use. By 1863, it had become apparent that such an operation could not continue without more serious financial assistance, so a second schoolhouse was built for $30 per month using money contributed by members of the community. This structure also lacked flooring and served as the town's only school until 1875 when a third building, costing $60 per monthwas erected which soon became known as "The Bank" because it housed the local bank until 1907 when it closed down due to fire damage caused by customers who were trying to steal cash from the bank during business hours! It wasn't until 1912 that oil drillers discovered gas reserves nearby (around today's Salina) and began production; this led to increased traffic through Coffeyville which necessitated the construction of two more schools; one brick buildingcosted $100 per month while another constructed out of wood (renamed "The Stick" after its builder) for just $5 per week remained operational until 1951! When finally replaced by asphalt roads in 1967 – just shy of 100 years after its initial construction - Old Dutchman's Hill reverted back into its natural surroundings once again!
