By 1900, Coffeyville had a store, two hotels, four churches, and a school. The development of oil production in eastern Kansas caused Coffeyville to become one of the most important cities in that region. In 1951, when oil production ended in Wichita County, Coffeyville became an independent city. It has since undergone several changes: In 1982 it became part of Sedalia; in 1998 it joined Topeka; and in 2007 it became part of Wichita Falls.

It was named after General John A. Coffey, who fought in the American Civil War and died at Appomattox Court House. Coffseyville began as a small community on the east side of Geary County near present-day Ottawa Mills. In 1881, it became the county seat of Geary County. The first post office opened in Coffeyville on April 14, 1881. The name change to Coffeyville occurred due to objections from neighboring towns that had been named for Governors Dodge and Philbrick (George Washington's brother). In 1888, local farmers formed the Farmers' Cooperatives of America to raise cotton on their farms north of town. This cooperative movement helped spur important economic development in Coffeyville over the next several years; by 1902, most of the original buildings were built or renovated in what would become known as "the Town Hall District." A major fire destroyed parts of downtown Coffeyville on December 12, 1911; however, within hours firefighters had rebuilt most of the building with help from donations from area businesses and citizens. That event served as a turning point for downtown CoffEYVILLE; since then it has undergone continual renovation/updateings throughout its history including a new $30 million dollar Renovation & Expansion project completed September 2016
