The history of gun barrels in Coffeyville, Kansas can be traced back to 1867. That year, the first guns were introduced into the town by John W. Coffey and his wife Anna. At that time, there were no firearms regulations in Kansas, soJohnW.Coffey and Anna put together a collection of shotguns and rifles and brought them to their home in neighboring Topeka. There they began shooting at games and target practice until they had a good collection of pistols as well. In 1870, two brothers named Jensch bought some land northwest of Coffeyville from Andrew Leahey for $3 per acre. They started a trade with local farmers, buying goods such as wheat, corn, butter and eggs from them. From this business venture came the nickname “The Corn Merchants” because they sold not only maize but also ammunition and other items related to farming. By 1875, there were over seventy-five gunsmiths in Coffeyville doing work on pistols, revolvers and shotguns (many of which are still extant today). The gunsmiths had learned how to make accurate firearms by hand due to the scarcity of tools available at that time. One such tool was an old fashioned chisel or carving saw used primarily for working woodworking projects such as barrel construction or joinery; it was difficult enough trying to do those things without having to worry about sharp edges cutting your hands open! In 1877 John W. Coffey died suddenly leaving his estate split between his children Anna (wife) John W., Jr., Andrew Leahey's widow Margret (mother), James Treadway (brother-in-law)and three sisters: Lillie Ewing (widow of George Weedon), Jessie Hale (widow of David Hale)and Emma Maynor(widow of Jacob Maynor). Anna became executrix while her children jointly held title to all assets except real estate within the town limits which remained with their father’s widow Margret/Margaret Treadway until her death in 1906 when it passed outright to her son James Treadway Jr.. In 1908 James married Lillie Ewing who became sole holderofthe Estate after Margret's death although she continued visitation rights until her own death in 1951.- James Treadway Jr.'s descendants continue the tradition today by reverting backtothe name "Anna"as executrix for all assets within the town limits.-

The history of Coffeyville is full of milestones that have helped make it an important community today: It is home to many businesses such as banks and restaurants; it has a library which provides access to books, periodicals and videos; it also boasts an outdoor amphitheater which can accommodate up to six thousand people; and it has several parks including one which is known as "The Hill". Additionally, coffeyvillians frequently participate in various festivals throughout the year such as summertime concerts at local amphitheatres or carnivals held at nearby theme parks like Six Flags Over Kansas City or Water World USA.
