Coffeyville is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 349 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in Coffeyville was George W. Keyes, who arrived there on horseback in 1854. Other early settlers were John Bigham and James Gorman. In 1875, J.B. Coffey founded the post office in what is now Coffeyville with four addresses: 1st & Elm Streets, 2nd & Elm Streets, 3rd & Elm Streets and 4th & Main Street (now 5th Avenue). The Post Office was discontinued by 1902 when it moved to Topeka from its original location on 1st Street. In 1907, Atherton Milling Company built a flour mill and Agricultural Implement Factory at present-day Big Ridge Road and Maple Drive in what is now Coffeyville. When that mill closed down in 1943, it left behind an impressive architectural legacy including a three-story brick building still standing today that formerly housed the company's administrative offices as well as various storage and machine shops addition to the complex which included two opera theaters (the one on Main Street being demolished in 1971) - one of which still remains open as a museum today operated by the Friends of Big Ridge Rd Museum Committee Incorporated (FRMIC). In 1951, when Wichita State University opened its current campus located north of town on east side of I-35W near Olathe Boulevard, much of what exists within walking distance of Hutchison Campus today were either constructed during or shortly after the school's establishment such as Parking Lot #1 off Elm Street back then called "Old Main Quad" now known as Athletic Green Lane; Gymnasiums/Doors North/Southwest corner where Hutchison Campus currently sits; Convocation Hall adjacent to Hutchison Campus football Stadium also constructed during or shortly after School's establishment such as Dome Roof over Archway now know as Gilliard Halls; Sheraton Suites adjacent to Hutchison Campus bookstore also constructed during or shortly after School'sestablishment such as One East Side Story Apartment Building currently used for Recreational purposes; Tower housing Library Annex also constructed during or shortly after School's Establishment including single story Completed height structure housing Paraphrase Machine Building completed in 1984 which incidentally still stands today directly across large lawn from Arboretum just west side of Hutchinson Campus entrance gate
Coffeyville was founded in 1854 by Jacob Coffey and his brother-in-law, David Smith. The town was named for General James Coffey who helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, the town passed an ordinance creating a school system which continues to be run today. In 1903, Coffeyville became a city and it has since grown into one of the largest cities in Kansas.
