Coffeyville was founded in 1881 by John Coffey and his family. The name "Coffeyville" comes from an early settler, John Coffey Jr., who named it after himself and his father-in-law in 1851. In 1881, John Coffey Sr.'s brother-in-law James Sweeny bought land east of the current town site and established a new settlement there. That year, the first post office was opened in the new town by J.D. Pogue. In time, other settlers followed suit and soon there were three settlements: CoffEYVILLE on the north side of US Highway 66 (now pavement), CRAWFORD on acreage east of US Highway 66 where present day Central High School stands (now also known as Crawford Elementary School), and WOODSIDE on acres west of highway 66 nearpresent day Van Horn Middle School (now known as Woodside Intermediate School). All three towns had their own schools until 1907 when all but one merged into Wichita's McCracken school district under then superintendent Herrick Barnhart. At that time too much competition for students caused many local businesses to move to Wichita or leave town altogether; some remain today including KFC/Chili's Pizza & More Store which became Parkview Mall after Murdock Boulevard moved into its present location nearby in 1980; and Harry's Coffee which continued to operate out of its original building until 2015 when it closed its doors after more than fifty years in business at 333 Main Street ().
