Derby, Kansas is a town in Sherman County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. Derby is one of two towns in Sherman County that are both located within the Wichita metropolitan area. The first known reference to a gun target in Derby was made on October 3, 1868 when Wm. H. Wilson firing a rifle at a small animal attracted the attention of George Fenton and others who came to see the scene. A few weeks later an outdoor game shooting match was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church with eighty-six participants from twenty-one states taking part. On December 1st 1868 local resident George Armstrong set up what he called "a little blacksmith shop" on Topeka Road east of present day Union Pacific Avenue for use as a gun range and target practice ground.
