El Dorado, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first post office in El Dorado was established on November 6, 1871. The first white person to set foot in what is now El Dorado was William Hutton who arrived there on September 15, 1854 with his family from Illinois. He named the site "Hutton's Bluff" after himself and his brother-in-law John Hutton. A year later he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Chappell and settled there with their families. On July 7, 1857 they had their first child, Ira Waugh Chappell Jr., also known as Wahoo or Wahoosie because of his light complexion. In 1860 they had another daughter, Lillie Maud Chappell; and two years later they had a son Elijah Waugh Chappell III (1861 - 1944). In 1865 the family sold their holdings in El Dorado to Jno. McNaught for $1,000; McNaught became a partner in the McNaught cattle company which operated until it merged into Wells Fargo & Coorporated in 1998. That same year local resident George Senter founded Senter Drug Company which still operates today out of an old grocery store at 9th and Garnett Streets NE near Wichita State University across from KFC Chicken All-Americanurger restaurant
Elsie and George El Dorado, brothers, founded the city of El Dorado in 1867. The town was located on the eastern edge of present-day Kansas City and thrived as a railroad town until it was destroyed by a fire in 1892. The city was reestablished in 1902 but declined in popularity and went out of business by 1924. It was finally abandoned in the late 1960s.
