The post-war boom ended abruptly in the early 1970s due to concerns over oil prices (which increased during that time). However, since then El Dorado has seen several modest boosts in popularity due to various events or happenings that have drawn attention to itsuracy: such as when local artist Kevin Kline came to town with his hit play "Elvis Presley: A Life In Pictures" in 2003; when parade participants marched through town on July 4th each year; or when professional athletes like American football player Bill Belichick visited during their annual visit to Wichita late last year (he also stopped at nearby Lenexa). Today El Dorado remains an unassuming little community with a strong sense of self-reliance that has helped it remain one of McPherson County's most vibrant towns even after years of economic decline. El Dorado, Kansas is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 979 at the 2010 census. El Dorado was founded in 1871 by citizens of Topeka and Pottawatomie counties. It became a city in 1907. The first settler in what would become El Dorado was Isaac Sutherlin, who arrived from Illinois on July 12, 1868. He built a cabin on the north side of the Santa Fe Trail just east of present-day downtown El Dorado. The town started as a small community around this time and soon had a school and store. In 1886, local resident James Auld purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land near present-day Wichita Falls to create Wichita County. This area would later be known as Topeka. In 1907, Topeka incorporation created an independent city status for El Dorado rather than allow it to merge with Wichita County as proposed by Hutchinson Mayor John Hennepin. In 1912, during World War I, El Dorado served notice towarmer Arthur Hargrave that he must leave because he could not support himself without government assistance and since war was now officially punishable by five years imprisonment instead of life imprisonment it placed him outside Ulysses S Grant's pardon list which exempted military officers from serving prison time if they were discharged honorably within one year after their conviction or acquittal on all charges including desertion or mutiny; however Arthur refused to leave until his daughter received her college education first). On November 14th 1918 General Order No 80 revoked amnesty granted to soldiers convicted prior to October 1914 due to inflation caused by hostilities abroad which increased prison sentences for civilians
