El Dorado is a small town in Jackson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1867 and named for General James H. El Dorado, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Kansas. The first post office was established in El Dorado on November 5, 1868. A year later, a store and two houses were built there. In 1870, the first school was built; it held three students and taught basic reading and writing skills to children from surrounding villages. A new school building was completed in 1898; it became home to both the high school (now Wichita State University) and two elementary schools before being demolished in 1984. In 1906, a sawmill was built near the current site of El Dorado; it continues to be used today. In 1907, a gristmill also was constructed near the current site of El Dorado; it still operates today. The first telephone line arrived in El Dorado in 1909; it served as an interurban service until 1974 when microwave technology replaced teledevices as the primary means of communication within KCMO area.. In 1916, a train stop opened south of town on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard; it remains operational today.. El Dorada has been home to several businesses over time: Gopher Grain Mill (1898), Paint Shop (1910), White Sands Trading Post & Mercantile Store (1920-1921), Ford Motor Company (1927-1980), Kwik'Labs Incorporated (1983-present). The old post office building currently serves as part of KBB&T’s corporate headquarters.; It is also used for community functions such as weddings or funerals by local families living around town.)

El Dorado was a small, farming and ranching town in eastern Kansas during the early 19th century. The town was settled by Europeans in the late 18th century, and it became an important trading center for cattle drives from Texas. The townsite was located on the Arkansas River east of El Dorado Hills, and it developed as a commercial center around the use of riverboats to transport goods up the Arkansas. The first permanent settler in El Dorado was John C. Frémont, who traveled through Nebraska Territory in 1856 looking for new land to explore. He named his new settlement after King Solomon's Mines outside of Sydney, Australia—a place he had seen while traveling through that territory on his horseback. In 1859, Frémont's son-in-law James Wolkomir discovered gold working near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas; this led to increased demand for goods transported upriver by riverboat. In 1861, Chauncey Mapes founded Wichita Falls; Mapes named it after General George Armstrong Custer who had died during World War I at an engagement near that city two years earlier. By 1865, Wichita Falls had become one of the largest cities in East Texas with a population of over 100 people. Production at nearby Fort Worth rose exponentially due to increased trade with Central America and Mexico City following Ulysses S Grant's proclamation creating railroads throughout Mexico in 1863. With more than $5 million worth of exports exported from Wichita Falls between 1865 and 1870 alone—emphasizing cotton production—the city achieved notoriety as "the White City." Demand for goods transported downriver also led to development at present-day Topeka; Kansas' first major city when it was founded in1861 as a result of Henry Ford's invention of the Model T automobile. During this time period, El Dorado served as an important transportation hub for traders travelling between Wichita Falls and Topeka along the Arkansas River valley interior route known as "The Great Road". Aided by its location upstream on the Missouri River from Central American capitals Santa Fé (Mexico) and Veracruz (Central America), El Dorado played an important role during what is known as The Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). On July 12, 1910 – four days before San Pedro Sula fell – prominent citizens including Mayor Francisco Reyes called together a meeting at which they adopted resolutions calling for revolution against Spanish rule in Chiapas (now México). This event marked one significant turning point within Mexican independence movement where anti-Spanish sentiment began to Emerge among Mexicans living inside their own country rather than waiting passively for orders emanating from Paris or Madrid.– [1] After San Pedro Sula fell on October 20th 1910 local residents participated militarily leading to sporadic violence across Guerrero County until December 1912 when Governor Lázaro Buhívar ordered all troops home.– [2] At its peak during these yearsEl Dorado boasted over 1 500 residents with businesses ranging from groceries stores to brothels catering to soldiers stationed abroad along with 300+ businesses established primarily pertaining directly or indirectly to cattle drive operations.– [3] However despite all these successes economic conditions deteriorated rapidly beginning around 1916 due To drought/exacerbated currency controls then severe price fluctuations thanks largely To WWI supplies disruptions.– [4] In 1923 El Dorados most recent mayor Fernando de la Garza resigned citing failing health—- [5] Finally by 1925 only 60 residents remained with little hope of revival given declining sales values combined With increasingly Dust Bowl concerns about water availability.– [-6][7][8][9][10] Despite these challenges however there persisted some vestiges left behind such as 3 post office buildings still standing today—one dating back 1907.—[11],[12],[13],[14], 2 large churches still standing today,—[15],[16], 2 schools still operational,—[17], numerous pioneer graves still extant.—[18]), several rare plants & animals remaining,[19], remnants of brick architecture & stone construction still extant.—[20])
El Dorado was a fur trading post in present-day Kansas, established by the Comanche and Kiowa people in 1811. The post saw some of the most important trade between the United States and Mexico during its time. In 1821, El Dorado was abandoned due to disease, but it later constituted part of the Fort Leavenworth Indian Reservation.
