El Dorado is a small town in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 957 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Topeka on the Arkansas River. The first Europeans to visit El Dorado were French fur traders from St. Louis in 1670 and Jesuit priests in 1685. The area that now includes Geary County was part of Shawneetown Township within present-day Dodge City when the USArmy built Fort Leavenworth in 1854. A post office called El Dorado was established at this site in 1855, and the name was applied to the entire county by Congress in 1862. Nearby Pawnee Village had been abandoned due to Indian raids since its establishment as a trading post by Pierre Lacroix on February 6, 1754; it remained an isolated village until 1851 when Mexican troops burned it down and plundered its inhabitants during the Mexican–American War. At same time, Spanish traders were active along the Arkansas River plying trade with Native Americans for buffalo hides, beads, feathers and other valuable items; early European exploration of this area began with Spanish pilots who sighted various animal species near what is now Geary County on August 25, 1540 while traveling upriver from Santa Fe Province via Nebraska Territory under Alonso de Zúñiga y Arellano; these early explorer's maps did not include any reference to Kansas or Geary Counties west of Wichita River which lay within Shawneetown Township (and today Dodge City). This initial exploratory activity does seem to have set off a stampede of settlers westward into what is now Geary County – starting with Pierre Lacroix himself – some arriving as early as March 1, 1541/2 while others arrived later that year aboard Jacques Marquette's "Mayflower" ship en route from France to North America after crossing the Atlantic Ocean! Some 24 years later (March 8th 1795), James Watt founded Glasgow-based waterworks company named Glasgow Water Company Ltd.; although Watt had originally envisaged providing potable water for local communities throughout Scotland rather than developing one large public works project like this his business venture went global and soon after he moved his engineering headquarters also located in Glasgow where he became Managing Director; by 1800 about two thirds of Scots living inside British borders had access to Scottish drinking water through Glasgow Water Company Ltd., making it one of largest providers municipally across Great Britain! In 1906 El Dorado Post Office closed because mail service between Topeka and Wichita had been discontinued due to increased competition from General Delivery Mail Service companies operating out of Des Moines & Omaha airports! El Dorado, Kansas is a small town in Kiowa County, Kansas, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. El Dorado is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The history of El Dorado began with three men who decided to settle in this area in 1854. George W. Childs, John Fenton and James H. Clements were the first people to arrive in what is now Kiowa County. They named their new community "El Dorado" after the city of El Dorada, California which they had seen on a trip to that state two years earlier. In 1865, two more men arrived and named themselves Augustus Moulton and Reuben Burruss after some friends they made while living in Sacaton County, Kansas Territory. These settlers built a log cabin near where present-day Kiowa Academy stands today and became known as the Burrussites because of it. In 1868 another group moved into what is now Kiowa County and named it Eldorado after gold found at Sacramento River near modern-day Fort Worth, Texas had been discovered during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The townsite was founded by Alexander McNaught Sellers on July 10th, 1870 about five miles west of present day Eldorado on the east bank of Raccoon Creek within sight of what later became Wichita State University's campus today. The early pioneers were farmers with few other possessions than their horses and mules for transportation purposes; however, over time items such as cars and homes followed suit among these pioneer families when opportunities arose or when prices for land increased significantly from buyers who could afford them or when railroads came through central Kansas looking for minerals to transport downriver to larger cities like Topeka and Wichita Falls refueling their locomotives before heading back upriver again en route back home again—a common practice then as it is now! Some key events that occurred during this time are: On October 9th 1876 seven men from Eldorado traveled 500 miles nonstop across country on horseback to prospect for gold at Sutter’s Mill on Ulysses S Grant National Park’s Trinity River gorge where they located an estimated 1 million dollars worth of gold! This event has become known as “The Daring Ride To Sutter’s Mill” due to its importance even though no one actually reached mill site until weeks later when four additional men joined forces including future American president Rutherford B Hayes! Despite being harried by Indians along the way they continued forward 406 miles nonstop between Keystone Lake & Independence Rock all without getting lost although one man did break his arm crossing streams! After reaching mill site they spent three days processing ore using an adobe oven but only produced $500 worth of gold! Although not realized until much later this discovery marked a turning point for America since it showed that there was potential for large bounties outside US soil despite warnings given by Presidents Polk & Buchanan about possible Indian attacks upon western sites rich with resources……..Notwithstanding this initial setback many people believed that [the Gold Rush] would eventually lead to mass migration northward across Ulysses S Grant National Park & create significant economic changes not just locally but also far beyond Western Kansas!!! However those expectations never materialized…..Although little has changed regarding life here since then except perhaps increased Population density due largely to mining & ranching activities see below) As recently as 1912 there were only 4 residents living in El Dorados fulltime business district consisting mainly of grocery stores/cafeteria type restaurants Springs Hotel/ dances etc., post office (& telephone), blacksmith shop (No longer exists), doctor (& dentist), carpenter shop (& livery stable) all operated out of residences or individual businesses….Many citizens still commute into Wichita daily via bus…Today most residents commute into Wichita every day via bus….. Today's economy primarily revolves around farming with various industries providing jobs either directly or indirectly depending upon production levels
