Gun targets have been a part of El Dorado, Kansas history for over eighty years. The first target was built in 1908 by A.F. Cummings and leased to the K-9 Club. The current target tower was built in 1935 and has been used by the El Dorado Rifle Association ever since. The first handguns were imported into the United States from Europe in 1868, and El Dorado became one of the leading gun markets in America. Gun manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson, Colt, Winchester, Remington and Ruger started production here in earnest during the late 1800s. In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed Executive Order 13526 which banned all handguns except those registered with state police departments. As a result of this order, target shooting slowly returned back into popularity throughout America thanks to online instruction and video games that allow users to practice safely under controlled conditions
