El Dorado, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit El Dorado were French traders and missionaries in 1821-22. A fur trader named François Xavier de la Salle chartered an expedition to find the new gold fields of California in 1797 and discovered what he thought was a wild land rich in gold but which turned out to be only barren hills. In 1821–24 James Hennepin explored and surveyed much of east-central Kansas for the U.S government as part of his "Final Report on the Topeka Purchase". He named one of his rivers after General John Beckwith, who had led him on this exploration trip; this river became known as Hennepin River after him. In 1839 prospectors drilled a well near present day El Dorado and found oil shale deposits which provided income until 1865 when production ceased because of industry growth in Wichita and other nearby towns. A post office called El Dorado was established at present day Randolph on October 12, 1860, by Territorial Governor Thomas Gage Keyes with advice from Major George Armstrong Custer about developing this territory into a settleable area for white men subject to Indian controlSupporting development work was done by local farmers with help from military leaders including Fremont's Lieutenant Colonel Alexander McGowan (1815-1892). A schoolhouse was built thereon in 1861; it burned down about 1870 but was rebuilt usingadobe lumber. Texas Western Railroad reached Randolph via Griggs Creek railway line on November 11, 1893; service began from Wichita that evening linking Wichita with Dallas/Fort Worth via Union Station which became the world's largest railroad station west of Chicago! The first post office building west of Chicago opened February 8, 1896 - still standing today at 202 W Arrowhead Rd., Suite 300 - inside what is now First National Bank Building across Main Street from City Hall (see photograph right). In 1907 an addition appeared on top: Pawnee Steel Works Inc., later renamed Republic Steel Corporation (RSC) due to antitrust concerns over their steel production practices within Wichita limitsAlthough initially profitable during World War I when production increased due to large demand for munitions made abroadRSC lost its grip during World War II as output plummeted Because Of The Great Depression they went bankrupt in 1945 becoming part of US Steel Corp before finally closing up shop altogether in 1984Their demise created problems because much basic steel used throughout America has been produced by RSC since then includesthis year's Keystone XL Pipeline construction also affecting their former operations along Griggs Creek near downtownDonnell Arena mall across Griggs Road just south side road bridge joining Quarry Park East & West sides)
