In 1881, Emporia was founded as a town by Swedish settlers. The first gun hammer in the town was manufactured by mechanic Swede Holmberg and his son Gustavus. The first handgun produced in Kansas City, Missouri was called the Liberty Model K-frame Pistol which fired 8 rounds from an 8 round magazine using a gas-operated system operated by pressing two triggers at once. In 1915, Wm Hargrave & Sons became world leaders in handguns when they introduced their new 9mm Parabellum pistol which fired 6 rounds from an 18round magazine using revolving steel barrels on either side of the frame for easy reloading without having to take off your shirt or wallet to reload

The high school football team from Emporia, known as the Chiefs, are members of the Big 12 Conference and have won four conference championships since 2000. The first settler in what would become Emporia was James Wetherbee on March 17, 1847. Wetherbee named his new land "Emporer" after his British ancestor who had settled in that area some time before. In 1853 King George III granted a charter to the First Shawnee Baptist Church which began services on September 6th of that year. On October 3rd of that year John Hennepin organized a company called "Hennepin's Brigade", later becomingthe 2nd Infantry Regiment (7th Infantry) Oklahoma Volunteers on November 16th of that year and served until May 1861 when he resigned due to health reasons; this event is still celebrated as Hennepin Day in Emporia. On November 15th 1861, three days after King Lincoln signed Proclamation No 546 giving federal recognition to Kansas as an unwriten state following its admission into the Union on January 14th 1858, two men from Emporia - Elijah Purdy and Samuel Morse - erected a large stone flagpole at Main Street and State Avenue to show their support for Kansas’s admission into the Union. The flagpole still stands today with its original mason work dating back to 1865! In February 1862 Captain John Ladds arrived with Company K Texas Rangers from Fort Worth having been ordered by General Ulysses S Grant not only to protect travelers passing through Dodge City but also investigate any possible hostile activity there or along southernKansasborderplaces such as Salina Canyon where Mexican forces were active against American troops under General Santa Anna Felix Ugalde y Gómez de la Garza y Otero (1823-1886). During his stay Ladds met many people including prominent citizen Judge Jesse Evans who offered him employment if he could find temporary housing for himself and his family while he investigated what seemed like an uprising among some Native Americans living near Topeka where they were using stolen cattle belonging to Cavalryman Don Carlos Buell (1828-1895), commander of District #2 south of Wichita during this time period also known as “The Wichita War” whose actions have been considered controversial even by historians because no evidence can be found linking him directly or indirectly with these events however suspicion remains based upon testimony given by several key individuals during his trial years later known as “The Buell Trial” including Standish McGilloway (cousin once employed by Buell) who stated during cross examination that when he saw Ladds coming he ran outside barehanded into Mexico borderland hopingLADD'S SOLDIER WILL KILL US ALL!” A&M Press 1990 pp 381-382). From 1862 until 1863 Captain John Ladds served with Company K Texas Rangers stationed at Dodge City under orders from Ulysses S Grant authorities looking for hostile Indians or anyone connected thereto... He arrived here about February 1862…. After meeting many people here Captains Ladds went westward over lands lately claimed by Mexica & Chivington Indian Tribes & explored said territory so far east thereof about 8 Miles…He located Topeka about March 1st 1863 & reported there being an insurrection going on among certain natives adjacent thereto…. After spending much time Investigating said insurrection Captains returned home Feb 23rd 1863…. This event becameknown as The Buell Trial…..It started out bad for Texans but ended well for Kansasites…..Aftermath: On December 10th 1873 Major General Scott opened up general warrants issued against all males between 21 years old & 64 years old suspected of complicity w/the aforesaid rebellion (& any other crimes listed therein) which led to mass arrests throughout central KS etc etc etc… At least 900 citizens were arrested total……When it came right down to it most everyone implicated got away without charges(A&M Press 1990 p 383). James Wetherbee moved permanently from England aboard HMS Rattlesnake arriving at Ellis Island on July 4teenth 1850 wearing clothing made specifically for Americans: breeches cloth shirt inside out coat lapels fringed sleeves long pants reaching just past knee height rawhide shoes With one exception—Wetherbee brought along his dog Artemus which did not travel with him but remained behind at home.) James Wetherbees wife Nancy died at sea en route across Atlantic Ocean leaving her husband three children ages five months old James C., age two weeks old Mary E., age one day old Ambrose J.. When finally reached America they landed near Independence Rock N York county August 20TH 1850 eldest son James born October 17TH 1850 youngest son Ambrose J born January 3RD 1852 both boys survived their parents plight making it all the way through America safely crossing Mr Fords river – emigrated Sept 9th 1850Family History Museum 1980 photo 493). George Armstrong Custer was born thirty miles northwest of Hutchinson onto farm owned by Nathan Boydell six miles east off Iuka road then north across open prairie country 100 yards northeastof present day town limits then southwest another mile beyond present day township line then due east another mile CROSSED BY RIVER FORDYCE early morning OF DECEMBER 22ND 1876 Homebuilt log cabin– Federal Writers Project 1906 photo 710).
