Emporia is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shawnee County. The name "Emporia" may be derived from the Emigrant Trail which ran through the community. The first settlers in what would become Emporia were three families who came to Kansas City in 1854. They named their settlement "Emporia." A post office was established at Emporia on March 24, 1856, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. A sawmill and gristmill were built near Emporia by Hargrave & Company in 1865-1866. In 1870, a flour mill was built on the Arkansas River north of town by John Gentry and Wm Hargrave; it became known as Gentry Mill after that company's founder. In 1892, a coal mine was opened near town by S r J Tanner & Son; it became known as Tanner Coal Mine after its owner. The railroad arrived in 1886 with tracks leading from Topeka to Wichita Falls via Emporia Junction; this moved passengers and goods between Wichita Falls and Topeka along what is now Interstate 40 Business Route 10 (BR 10). When BR 10 was realigned into its present route bypassing downtown Emporian on December 15, 1990 following an tornado outbreak that week, part of the old alignment including BR 10 through Emporian were included within the new routing. In 1907-1908 two hotels were built just east of main street: one called The Parked Horse Inn while another called The Depot Hotel served as overflow rooms for both establishments until they closed around 1915 when Main Street underwent significant engineering work which demolished most of both buildings creating today's only surviving structure from those days - The Depot Hotel building still stands vacant today despite being abandoned for many years! On January 16th 1905 Union Pacific Railroad President David Beatty announced plans for a new line west from Council Bluffs over existing Indian Territory lines paralleling US Highway 362(now I-40) connecting Wichita Falls with Council Bluffs via Emporian Crossing located about southeast of today’s city limits on land donated by Major General James Bittner also president of UP during that same year – this new line would be known as “the Beatty Line” due to these two previous owners! After several months of planning construction began on July 4th 1906 just northeast of town center (west side current day US Highway 136), with daily trains service commencing September 9th!! This original train stop can still be seen standing today adjacent to then local school grade school called “Beatty Elementary School” off today’s south side street corner opposite today’s bank building where once stood Rubber Tree restaurant!!! Today EMPORIA has evolved into an vibrant community hosting numerous businesses and residents enjoying all aspects thereof thanks largely to our powerful economic climate + great people like Mayor Ron Helms + his team!
