Emporia is a city in Kansas, United States. The population was 14,859 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 American Community Survey, the population had increased to 18,914. Emporia is the county seat of Emporia County. The first settler in what would become Emporia was James Hickey on July 6, 1827. He and his wife Priscilla located near present-day downtown Emporia on a land grant from Alexander Cartwright. Hickey also received 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of Common Ground Creek as part of his estate purchase. In 1854, Kansas Territorial Legislature provided for two townships within Emporia County: one east of where I-435 now intersects US 50 and the other west of US 50 and known today as Prairie Township No. 2; both were given to David Fenton in recognition for his many years' service as justice of the peace for portions of this county. The town site chosen for incorporation by citizens on November 10, 1860 was just south of present-day downtown Emporia between First and Second streets and Third Avenue and contained only about 150 people with no mills or factories available to produce goods needed by their growing townspeople. By 1870, however, general business operations had started up in nearby Leavenworth while residents built several large frame buildings used as schools (the first being erected on Fourth Street), churches (the first brick building erected in town), a Masonic Lodge (founded December 12th 1865), a flour mill (1862), an oil well (1864), mercantile stores (189 feet long by 45 feet wide at its widest point – becoming Wichita's second largest store after Wm Jorgensen & Sons' Store at Seventh Street and Main Avenue), physicians' offices(1 office established October 1861; Dr John Aiken became sole physician January 1st 1870) and three hotels: The Citizens Hotel [Preussen], The Commercial Hotel [Dorman] and The Union Hotel [McDonnell]. In 1886 an addition to the hospital was dedicated which became known as "The General Hospital". In 1898 another hotel called "The Capitol" replaced it due to fire damage done during an overflow dinner held at that time when City Hall burned down). By 1900 all but one hotel had been destroyed either through fire or depression caused by consolidation among local businesses into larger concerns led by Dorman who owned most everything north of Wichita Boulevard including all six acres south side Railroad Tracks extending eastward into Iroquois Park bounded today by Broadway Boulevard NE / Interstate 90 / Shawnee Road NW - forming what is now Midtown Oklahoma City proper - becoming primarily a meatpacking district paralleling I-90 with its warehouses converted into apartments blocks along Shawnee Road NW - shamefully demolished some thirty years later leaving nothing more than foundations remaining until Save Our Shawnee neighborhood redevelopment project restored them back to their previous grandeur circa 2000 further helping add much needed retail diversity now totaling over 100 acres incorporating several thousand new jobs directly Emboldened even more when early 21st century I-435 development created massive mall vacancy area presently addressing this problem via mixed use development proposal resulting inpletion not only establishing emporian anchor restaurant/entertainment complex inside existing structure but also creating intricate Streetscape plan utilizing high fence/light rail transit system components

Emporia is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. The City of Emporia was founded in 1881 and named for George Washington Emporia. It became the capital of Shawnee County in 1907. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Major General (and future US President) Abraham Lincoln was born in nearby Leavenworth. The first permanent settler in Emporia was John Fenton on July 15, 1881. A post office called Emporia was established in 1883 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1904. The town site had been chosen by a group of businessmen who met to discuss a location for a new town center on December 12, 1881; this group included Edwin Davenport and James Wickersham. Davenport donated land for the town site which he named "Empora." In 1907, Shawnee County created the cities of Topeka and Wichita before merging with Sedgwick County to form Kansas City-Kansas metropolitan area that included all of Shawnee and northeastern Douglas counties including Emporia. On January 1, 1909, Topeka merged with Wichita while embittered Topeka residents boycotted elections that year to protest what they saw as an unfair merger process that did not take into consideration their concerns about job loss and budget cuts within Wichita's city government. After several months of peaceful protests led by Mayor Harry Sibleyhaar (a self-taught lawyer), the merger finally went through on February 17 following approval from the county legislature over objections from top Wichita officials who claimed that no one outside of Topeka could understand why their city should have been given an extra seat on the metro council when other municipalities were not given any preference over those without seats or special status within their communities - an allegation disputed by both Topeka Mayor Sibleyhaar and county legislators who saidTopeka's representation reflected its size relative to Wichita while other smaller towns received preferential treatment). The annexation of neighboring towns – Hutchinson ( annexed on January 1st 1913), Alief ( annexed on November 3rd 1921), Garden Grove ( annexed on May 25th 1925), Encinitas ( annexation announced on October 16th 1927) – followed quickly thereafter as businesses began moving into areas newly annexed rather than wait for official notification from Shawnee County authorities that their communities had been added to the city limits; this trend continued until 1930 when all but Encinitas were annexed because local officials felt they were undervalued compared to larger neighbor cities such as Wichita which enjoyed preferential treatment due to its size relative to other KCK municipalities (). As Kansas City-Kansas Metropolitan Area grew larger still throughout most of World War II era it struggled with funding shortages caused by military spending which led then Governor Haskell Toomey Sr., initially reluctant but eventually supportive of broader metropolitan government plans developed by his predecessor Orville Freeman - instead preferring centralized planning within specific geographic regions controlled by federal authorities instead of expanding westward beyond KCK's current boundaries (). However afterPresident Franklin D Roosevelt successfully intervened via Executive Order 9108 givingKCK additional powers under National Defense Authority - including authority over transportation and firefighting services - former Governor Toomey reluctantly agreed to expand metropolitan government plans westward onto portions of Douglas and Ness counties following positive community reaction there also (). Eventually these same boundaries would be permanently expanded again following another gubernatorial directive order grantingKCK full control over all aspects related thereto () making KCK one major regional municipality spanning multiple states () today continuing its proud history as one half of nation's largest metropolitan areawith more than 2 million people living therein
