Emporia, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census and 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka-Anadarko metropolitan area. The first European to land in what is now Emporia County was Juan de Escobar on July 24, 1502 when he sailed from Mexico City with eight ships and twenty-six men to explore this new continent. He named his discovery "Kansas" because it was near the present day city of Topeka. In 1854, George A. Smith negotiated and sold Indian land in what are now Emporia and Ottawa counties to John Milward for $5,000USD; this became the nucleus for Centennial Park which was established in 1886 by grazer Jethro Peebles as a public parkland within which residents could enjoy nature without having to leave their homes. In 1870, James Worthington founded an insurance company here that would become one of Wichita's most successful businesses; it merged with AGUHI Insurance Company in 1907 to form Worthington & AGUHI Incorporated (later WAGI). Other early business successes included being one of the first companies to ship beer into Wichita via rail (1888) and being one of the largest retailers/distributors of milk products in Wichita during its early years (1910). In addition to its retail operations, WAGI also operated two large slaughterhouses – one located on Main Street east of downtown Wichita and another on Buffalo Drive across from Eastern Market Mall – through much of the 20th century until they were closed down by government regulation in 1974 after which WAGI focused more exclusively on its agricultural operations until 1998 when it re-opened its downtown store under new management as The Grist Mill Store; today it still operates as a grocery store/café house combo business with several delis inside along with an extensive wine program including over 100 different types of wines tastings available each week! Emporia was founded on November 3, 1867, by George W. Emporia and his brother John F. Emporia. The city became a part of the US in 1907. In 1951, the City of Emporia merged with the Town of Topeka to form one large city. A new downtown district was built in the 1960s and 1970s but has since been abandoned. The first settler in what is now Emporia was George W. Emporia who arrived in 1851 from Illinois. The town was named after him because he donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse in 1855-56. At first, most everyone lived near the river or its water supply which made for easy access to goods and services necessary for life on the frontier such as farming and ranching opportunities. However, over time people began to move away from this environment due to changing economic conditions, plentiful farmland available elsewhere, and advances in transportation that made it possible to reach other parts of America much more easily than when they had arrived. In 1907, George W.'s son John F.'s wife Anna married Charles Hinson who settled down east of Topeka in an area known as "The Flats." By 1911 there were only a few hundred residents living within sight of Topeka proper while over 1 million people lived within five miles (8 kilometers) of Kansas City according to official census reports from that year! This growth was due primarily to railroads reaching Topeka much later than before which opened up vast new areas for settlement including eastern Shawnee County which still surrounds Kansas City today! Kansas City experienced rapid growth following World War I however during this time many young families left their homes behind specifically because they could not find jobs back home tilling soil or working on factories like those found throughout Great Britain or Germany at that time! Many found work as janitors or construction workers building roads and bridges across America just like their counterparts did before them! The cost of living back then was very different too; food prices were lower hereabouts than even where they were located today while housing costs also remained relatively low given how accessible everything seemed at that point! Despite all these challenges KC grew quickly into one of America’s largest cities by 1920 with over 100,000 residents according to census data! During World War II KC again experienced rapid growth as many people returned home from military service; however onceagain many Americans fled overseas instead due both political instability (the war led to increased immigration rates among American citizens), Armed Conflict (the war caused widespread destruction across Europe),and natural disaster (such as floodings which impacted eastern Kansas).
