In 1907, Wichita State University became Kansas State University; however, Emporia County continued to be named for Wickenburg until that year when its name was changed to match Wichita's separate campus location within KSU's boundaries. During World War II, many industries were based on Emporia including aircraft production at Area 51 National Security Complex just outside town limits prior to 1945 but now abandoned farmland adjacent thereto due to environmental concerns about plutonium contamination which has since ceased or been largely mitigated
