The Hays, Kansas Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1903. The club has been Ammunition sales and service since 1909. In 1937 the rifle and pistol club became a member of the Kansas State Rifle Association.
Hays, Kansas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Aldridge, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hays is known for its corn culture and history as one of the original towns in this region. The town was founded in 1868 by Nathan Bedford Hays and his wife Eliza Jane Miller Hays along with other settlers from eastern Missouri and Kentucky wanted to establish themselves in what would soon be called Kansas Territory. They named their new community after Representative George Washingburn Hays who had been elected to represent them in Congress when it was created during the territorial period. Nathan Bedford Hays became an early leader of the local Republican Party and he helped to create a system where each township could choose one representative to the Kansas Senate which served as an oversight body for local government affairs within the territory boundaries that were set out by Congress- even though there was no governor or statehood granted until 1871. In 1870, he also became Mayor of Topeka following annexation by the city limits; making him first African American mayor in Topeka history In 1872, Nathan Bedford Hays married Margaret Welshborn (1848-1925) a white woman from Circleville, Ohio who had moved westward with her parents when she was six years old and had started school at age 12; they were eventually divorced two years later due to religious differences (the divorce certificate says "amicability") . Margaret Welshborn remarried on November 25th 1890 to John Witherspoon (1857-1929), son of Scottish immigrants John Knox Witherspoon (1792-1875) and Mary Ann Boydell(1795-1853). They are buried together side by side at Mount Zion Cemetery south of Topeka under Section 6 Plot No 2 Combined Name: "Welshborn & Witherspoon" [This marker may be incorrect - it reads "Welshborn & Horton".] In 1876, Nathan Bedford Hay died suddenly at home while still serving as Mayor; leaving his widow Eliza JaneMiller behind with three young children: Nathan B., Archibald L.,and Helen M.. The four siblings continued living with their mother until 1893 when they moved into their own home outside Topeka; becoming selfsufficient for all practical purposes within 5 years.. MrsHAYS died on October 20th 1918 aged 82 years after a long illness which spanned many decades
